dditions and renovations to existing houses are always interesting challenges. In all cases, spatial needs must be met either through the addition of space or through reworking existing space, or through a combination of both. Beyond this, one of two approaches is usually appropriate as regards the character or style of the design.

n the first instance where the existing form has desirable character, the changes should reflect this, respecting and maintaining the language of the original design in the new work. In the second case where the character is not worth saving, then transforming the original structure while adding to it can lead to a pleasing "New Whole" design. In both cases, the aim is to arrive at a point where new and existing blend so well that a stranger viewing the house would be unaware that any changes had taken place at all. Client's tastes and preferences are of course part of determining which approach is appropriate.
